Pour-Over with Fine Robusta

Reading time: 3 minutes

Pour-over is one of the cleanest and most forgiving ways to experience Fine Robusta. The method highlights clarity while keeping the natural boldness and smooth cocoa-like notes. If you want a cup that feels strong but still light and easy to drink, pour-over is a perfect match.

Why Fine Robusta Works for Pour-Over

Fine Robusta has a naturally stable flavor profile — low acidity, clear structure, and strong body. In pour-over, this translates into a smooth, rounded cup without sourness or bitterness. Even if your pouring technique isn’t perfect, the flavor remains consistent and balanced.

What You Need

• Pour-over dripper (V60, Kalita, or similar)
• Filter paper
• Kettle
• Digital scale
• Fresh Fine Robusta beans

Freshness and grind consistency make the biggest impact here.

Grind Size for Pour-Over

Use a coarse grind: 14–15 EK (PickleCoffee standard).
A coarser grind helps Fine Robusta drain cleanly and prevents over-extraction, keeping the cup smooth and rounded.

If the brew tastes flat → grind finer.
If it tastes too heavy or bitter → grind coarser.

Recommended Ratio

Start simple with:
20–22 g coffee → 270 g water
This ratio gives a cup that is bold but not too dense, ideal for daily drinking.

Water Temperature

Use 92–95°C.
Fine Robusta extracts well at this temperature range without developing harsh edges.

Step-by-Step Pour-Over Guide

  1. Rinse the filter to remove paper taste and warm the brewer.

  2. Add 20–22 g of coarse-ground coffee (14–15 EK).

  3. Bloom with 40 g of water for 30 seconds. This releases gases and improves clarity.

  4. Pour slowly in circular motions until reaching 270 g total water.

  5. Aim for a total brew time of 2:30–3:00 minutes.

Fine Robusta tends to drain evenly thanks to its stable grind behavior, which helps keep brews consistent cup to cup.

What the Cup Should Taste Like

A well-brewed Fine Robusta pour-over should be:
Smooth and low-acid
Bold but clean, with no bitterness
Notes of cacao, roasted nuts, caramel
Clearer and lighter than a French Press or Phin brew

It’s a strong coffee, but it drinks surprisingly easy.

Dialing In: Simple Adjustments

If your cup tastes too strong or heavy:
• Grind coarser
• Lower your ratio to 1:16

If your cup tastes too light:
• Grind a bit finer
• Increase coffee by 1–2 g

Fine Robusta reacts gently to these changes, so dialing in is straightforward.

Why You Should Try It

Pour-over brings out a side of Fine Robusta that many people don’t expect — smooth, clean, and modern. It’s strong without feeling dense, flavorful without being complex or acidic. If you want a simple method that consistently produces a balanced cup, pour-over is one of the best ways to enjoy Fine Robusta.
